Matrescence: Understanding the inner transformation after baby

There's a lot of talk about pregnancy.
There's a lot of talk about the baby.
But we still talk far too little about what a woman goes through when she becomes a mother.
Matrescence is a term that describes the psychological, emotional, and identity transformation a woman experiences after the birth of her child. It is a period of upheaval as intense as adolescence. Yet, it is rarely explained, rarely anticipated.
Becoming a mother doesn't just change your daily life. It transforms the way you think, feel, prioritize, love, worry, and exist.
Some women describe a feeling of losing their former identity. Others speak of a powerful awakening. In reality, the two can coexist.
Why do we feel different after having a baby?
Hormonal changes play a huge role. A mother's brain undergoes biological changes to strengthen protective instincts, vigilance, and attachment. This is why you may experience heightened sensitivity, increased fear, or a constant need to check on your baby.
But there's also a social and personal change. You go from being a woman to being a mother. Responsibilities increase. The mental load explodes. The way others see you changes.
And in the midst of all this, you're still trying to understand who you've become.
Maternal guilt: a universal feeling
Almost all mothers experience that little inner voice at some point that says:
“Am I doing enough?”
“Am I doing this right?”
“Am I a good mother?”
The truth is, the mere fact that you're asking yourself these questions proves your involvement.
Equipping yourself with solutions that make everyday life easier can truly alleviate this invisible pressure. For example, when a breastfeeding mother discovers a gentle alternative for transitioning to bottle-feeding, it doesn't mean she's giving up something. It means she's adapting.
Matrescence is about accepting that we evolve. That we change. That we grow up alongside our child.
And above all, understand that you have the right to be tired, to need help, and to look for solutions that simplify life.
